In three days, the moon will crash into your world, and it's all because of the
cursed mask the Skull Kid wears. Using his ocarina's time-traveling powers and
the magic of several masks, our Hyrulean hero, Link, must relive these 3
days leading up to the lunar landing until he can undo Majora's evil and untangle
the events that are provoking doomsday...
Baron Von Stupor's Review
Initially when I first played it, I wasn't too fond of it. I thought it was too damned hard! Also, the presence of only four dungeons turned me off. All the characters looked the same and Link's still a kid! Well, I decide to go through and beat Ocarina of Time Master Quest without a guide to atone for the spoilers I looked at in the original (I'm a hardcore gamer who likes to figure stuff out for himself to the best of his ability first).
Well, I finally did it and decided that since I never finished Majora's Mask (due in part to the fact that I lost my expansion pak), I would get my hands on The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition and attempt Round 2 with Majora's Mask. By the end of it I discovered how to properly appreciate the game for what it is. The creators were ordered to create a Zelda game in one year, probably because they knew the N64 was dying. Any knowledgable gamer would know that one year to make a game is 100% bullplop. Knowing this, I noticed a few things:
That's why all the characters looked the same.
That's why there's only four dungeons.
That's why the items were the same (almost)
Given the limit the programmers had for that game, I think they did a hell of a job. By also observing the character development, the depth of the history involved (Skull Kid, etc.), and the fact that I'm fascinated with masks already and a Zelda game was created around masks, I actually came to like this game as much as Ocarina of Time. I don't care what anyone says, the programmers did a damn good job in one year.
Now, to review the game itself.
Control: 10/10
As with Ocarina of Time, the control scheme couldn't be any better, and I'm certainly glad Nintendo didn't try to fix something that isn't broken.
Sound: 7.5/10
For some reason, Zelda scores have never impressed me that much, though a few of my favorites would include but not be limited to the Requiem of Spirit, Nocturne of Shadow, Elegy of Emptiness, and the Stone Tower theme.
Replay value: 6/10
As with any single player adventure, once the story's over, sadly enough, it's over. A few people who don't want to let go will try to get every optional thing there is to get and chase rumors, but unfortunately, the game ends. However, some games (Metroid Prime, Wind Waker) are actually so fun that they're worth going through again... after a year or two. Thusly, the replay value is boosted two fold.
Gameplay: 9/10
The game does a pretty good job of keeping you into the story, and I found myself getting really sidetracked for optional stuff quite often. That's never a bad thing. Except for the Goron Races. GOD, I hate those Gorons.
Overall: 8.125/10
Great game, great game. Not the best, but still a great game. Again, considering this game was done in a year, yeah. Damn good game.
