Wind Faker

Baron Von Stupor

As with any other Zelda game, this does many things, including giving us complex dungeons to maneuver, giving us new treasures to have fun with while bringing back some oldies but goodies, and gave us a very involving plotline continuing the neverending story of the legend of Link, forever being overshadowed by the name of Zelda, a character whose playability is nonexistent, unless you count the ill-fated CD-i game(s). However, one thing was done that caused such an uproar that many decided to boycott the game. Link was turned into a big-headed, el-shaded cartoon character!!! Oh, no!!! ...AND HE'S STILL A KID!!! Come on, people! It's a freaking cartoon! So what? If I'm not mistaken, in The Legend of Zelda, the original on NES, I recall Link looking exectly like a booger carelessly flicked onto the screen by a roommate or family member, and when he swings his sword, that's just the radioactive enzymes reacting to the blood, but did that stop me or thousands upon thousands from liking it? Besides, there's no denying that the cel shading idea makes way for many, many possible facial impressions, adding to the realism of the character (as I dare not say game).

Let's think back on Link's past incarnations, shall we? In the drawings for Zelda 1, Zelda 2, and even Zelda 3 (A Link to the Past), Link never wore anything under that tunic! I would know, because I saw a picture of him jumping with one leg sticking out (a la Mario), and the roundness of the base of his leg leads me to comclude that if he wore anything under there, it's been long lost in his ass. Personally, I think that in the Zelda 1 incarnation of Link, he looks exactly like a booger carelessly flicked onto the screen by a roommate or family member. In the CD-i series that was clearly and obviuously designed to haunt dreams for eternity, Link didn't look much better. He still looked like the clumsy boy just going through puberty, but this time around, his mouth had a pink outline. Is that lipstick? Either way, Link was butchered that much more when he appeared in a cartoon on The Super Mario Bros. Super Show. No lipstick? Good. Sounds like a hippie? Far, far worse. I mean really, what would you rather have, a drag queen Hero of Time or a surly, whiny kid who simply wants a piece o' Zelda's booty? So let's face it, people, Link sure has seen better days, but he has seen far, far worse.

Besides, most people who trashed Wind Waker's graphics never and refused to play the game (remember, I said most, not all). Personally, I didn't know what to think when I saw the clips for the game. I thought it would either be a glaring success or a terrible defeat. Either way, I was staying true to Shigeru Miyamoto, because I was confident that the man wouldn't let me down. Speaking of Mr. Miyamoto, this incarnation of Link is how Mr. Miyamoto envisions Link, this is how the creator of Zelda thinks Link should be. The man knows Zelda better than anyone else in the world, are you really going to try and tell him he's wrong?

There are different kinds of gamers out there, I will only name a few. First, there are sports fans. They'll only buy sports games because hey, they like their sports. There are other gamers who play games that they think they'll go back and play again. There are fanboys who will buy everything of a particular company, brag about what they have, and then trash the competition. There are beauty gamers, who don't really care if a game is good or bad, just if it looks good or not. Those gamers more than likely were most of (if not all of) the Zelda boycotters. Some people blend into one category, others may blend into multiple categories, with varying intesities of the traits I just listed. One thing we must remember is that GRAPHICS ALONE DO NOT MAKE THE GAME. What makes the game is a combination of graphics and other key elements, such as sound, gameplay, plot, replay value, etc.. Hey! Game reviewers rate games based on these, too! Well, what do you know? With this said, I'll move onto the game review. I believe I've justified Wind Waker's graphics enough here, or at least I tried.

Control: 10/10

As alsways, the control scheme couldn't be better. The addition of the counter is an interesting asset and adds to the depth of the fights.

Sound: 10/10

Like I said, none of the Zelda games have a lot of music that truly grips my ears, but I not rating that. I'm rating the sound on how it suits the game, how it adds to the atmosphere of the game, and Wind Waker does an A+ job with that.

Replay Value: 5/10

This has a lower reply value than Majora's Mask because after a long time, I did decide that I wanted to play the game again, but it's not hooking during my whimsical decision to play it, and I got hooked into another good game first.

Gameplay: 7.5/10

The game has a good plot, the only real problem I have with it is that sailing over the ocean for god-awful amounts of time doesn't really feel adventurous to me. To me, an adventurous quest to a temple would be perilous, including running across a loarge field dealing with different kinds of enemies along the way, and such. Needless to say, like Majora's Mask. Ocarina of Time didn't offer as much adventurousness, in my opinion, as Majora's Mask.

Overall: 8.125/10

The game is still wonderful, plain and simple. If you can get past the graphics (assuming you don't like them), this is still a masterpiece. I recommend it.

Linker

Windfaker from the beginning struck a chord inside my heart. I was very upset to hear that after the many great adventures of Link, they turned him into a demented South Park character. Seriously, the graphics were fine, but why did they turn him into a gay kid again? No one likes the kid.....everyone wants a macho man! Why do you think the Zelda 2005 game will sell millions? 'Cause Link is hot! Wait...no...uhh...anyway...

When I played the game, I found the music to be a little....well...bad. I mean, I felt like I was in Mexico. Don't wanna go back there. But anyway, as the game progressed, the controller was pissing me off. ARGH! Die Windfaker!!!

The only good thing about the Windfaker was the fact that Link's moves were pretty hot. He had an enormous amount of abilities with the items he collected. I give that a 9 out of 10!

Everything else was.....blah...I give it a 6 out of 10

keeper_of_the_triforce

I thought the game was pretty good. The part of it I liked the most was the songs Link played, mostly the temple songs. The graphics weren't the most awesomest ever, but I've seen far, FAR worse. I'm more thankful the messed with just the graphics and not the storyline, hell-driven Zelda fans would be everywhere! Just think "It could have been worse."

Overall: 7.9/10
